How did Ole Miss hold AU to 55 points?
Kermit Davis may not be the SEC Coach of the Year. I think Rick Barnes deserves the award, but their may not be a better coach than Kermit. The small miracle that is this season's Ole Miss cannot be overlooked. As Bruce Pearl if Davis can coach. It appeared that Coach Davis gave up the paint in order to harass AU's outside shooters. The result was taming the Tiger in their lair. What he has done with Ole Miss has been outstanding. What he proved last night should be remembered. Auburn doesn't have the inside game to beat you. It is much better to get in their faces on defense. Give them the old "Dentine" defense. Davies also mixed his zone defense when the Rebels went man. The 1-3-1 was perfect. It allow the quick and fast Rebel guards to shut down the Tigers. Harper and Brown had bad nights and no other Tigers picked up the slack.
The result was a 60-55 win. That was the Tigers lowest scoring output this season. The sweep was unexpected. Auburn was a favorite, but the Tigers were outmatched from the opening tip. Ole Miss had to hang on to win when the Tigers had one more run. Neither Harper or Brown could make enough threes to get over the top. Ole Miss put four defenders outside the arc. It worked.
Auburn fans are now worried about making the NCAAT. There is a lot of basketball left. A loss to Alabama later this month is now a huge game for both team. For Alabama, the Ole Miss win means that Alabama has beaten both Ole Miss and Mississippi State this year. The loss to State in Starkville will fade from memory by the time the Selection Committee by the time the pick are made in my opinion. The Tigers still have games with games with Mississippi State, Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama. Each of those games will be tough to win. The high flying Tigers have been grounded for the moment. I am interest in how Auburn handles adversity. Ole Miss gave a road map to find a way to beat the Tigers. For Alabama, I am not sure the guards have enough quickness to slow down Auburn. One thing is certain. Basketball in the State of Alabama just got a lot more interesting. For Auburn, the future is now. Auburn loses a ton of player this season, and even though they have a great freshman class coming in, the SEC is a difficult learning curve. The Tigers are now 16-8. Not what expected.
